Global trade war looms over carbon taxes

This is what happens when we finally arrive at the pointy end of the ludicrous and dangerous policies implemented in the EU to theoretically reduce emissions [note: which don’t work]. The Chinese are furious at the EU’s unilateral decree that it will start taxing international flights as part of it’s carbon pricing regime:

China has warned the European Union to abandon its controversial carbon tax on airlines or risk provoking a global trade war.

Adding weight to the warning, an industry insider told the Financial Times that the Chinese government was seriously considering measures to hit back at the EU if it insists on charging international airlines for their carbon emissions.

In a case initiated by US airlines, the European Court of Justice ruled on Wednesday that the EU’s carbon emissions trading scheme did not infringe on the sovereignty of other nations, and that it was compatible with international law. The change is set to go into effect from January 1.

Chinese airlines have also been preparing an legal challenge in Europe and they still plan to proceed with it, but Chai Haibo, deputy secretary general of the China Air Transport Association, conceded that the European ruling complicated matters as it means they will need to find an alternative reason to challenge the law.

Even if court action fails, Mr Chai was optimistic that concerted global pressure could yet persuade the EU to repeal its law. In the short term, he called on Brussels to delay implementation in light of the intense international outcry that it has provoked.

“Except for the EU, no countries support this,” he said.

He added that several Chinese government departments in Beijing were in the midst of researching possible counter-measures. Chinese airline officials have said before that they might refuse to pay the carbon tax, raising the prospect of a drawn-out legal fight. (source)

The realities of the imaginary green utopia begin to sink in.

Comments

  1. The new EU airline carbon (dioxide) emissions tax is expected to cost the aviation industry (US)$23.8 billion over 8 years and with airline profit margins at record lows of about 1 cent in ever $1, it’s not a cost that will be bourne by the industry.

Instead of the EU encouraging tourism to help get itself out of the current and coming financial crisis, the EU eco-tards are now going to tax tourists for the privilege, even before they step foot off the plane … well done!

  2. Russ Jimeson via Facebook says:

This is what happens when you have an unelected and unaccountable bureaucracy ruling over (not governing) a multifarious super state with no checks and balances to moderate their whims. The EU is collapsing under the weight of its own ill-conceived diktats.

  3. Lew Skannen says:

It is so ironic that we are now reliant on the Russians to host email files to keep them free and in the public domain and on the Chinese to talk common economic sense.

  4. EU Tourism is dying……

Gone will be the days of hopping on an airplane and flying off to exotic and not so exotic locations if the EU has its way. So sorry Frank, none of us will be able to afford it.

  5. The EU bully boys and girls are at it again. They are a royal pain in the butt with their busybody interface and UN style socialism that has caused grief around the world. I can’t wait for the coming meltdown and demise of the EU.
You have to watch this video!

Nigel Farage, the leader of Ukip, said: “With this kind of stealth taxes, Eurosceptics across Europe will take up the slogan ‘no taxation without representation’.” This isn’t about concern for the climate, it’s about money!

In the meantime watch Nigel Farage the only sane MEP from the UK, tell the mandarins where to off in the EU parliament, it’s a delight to see them cringe!

Farage warns the UK against an “economic prison” similar to the one now faced by the Greek people, whose lives are now falling under the control of their creditors: the European Union, the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank.

“The biggest threat we face now in Europe is to keep countries like Greece, Portugal, Ireland – even Spain and Italy – trapped inside an economic prison, stripped of their democracy. The governments of Italy and Greece were removed by these bully-boys in Brussels. The bigger threat for them is to stay and die a long economic death,” said Farage.

Australia could do with a straight shooting politician like Nigel Farage

  6. Nigel Farage: Believe you me. If we were to put this Euro package to the electorate of Greece, of Portugal, of Ireland, of Italy, of Spain, they would all say no. …. These electorates find themselves trapped inside an economic prison that is called the Euro. Their democracy has been stripped from them. My fear is the kind of civil disobedience and civil disorder that you have already seen on the streets of Greece will multiply. … If you are stuck in a bad marriage, the best thing to do is end the marriage and start again. I see no hope at all for the Greek economy, stuck inside this economic prison that is called the Euro.

  7. Sorry to hog the comments but I’m steaming mad with the EU and all socialist!!!

This feels strange; I’m rooting for Mainland China vs. Europe.

This is extremely poorly timed as it comes at a time when the European Central Bank is hoping that China will purchase European Euro bonds and complete the giant Airbus deal, it could be bad for the EU and Airbus, but good for Boeing. Boeing will just have to fly all the folk to the climate conferences!

Of course this sort of action led to the second dip in the Great Depression that turned what would have been a severe recession and market correction into the long drawn out mess it was. I wonder if these watermelons really are intent on the destruction of the economies of the world as a way to usher in worldwide socialism.

  8. Bryan Harris says:

This is just what we need at this time, a trade war – upsetting the rest of the world with an insane tax that will do nothing for anybody, except those that receive it – it won’t incline other countries to help the EU in current difficult times, nor will it make the EU popular, far from it, the world is beginning to see what insanity lurks within the EU.

  9. Mervyn Sullivan says:

    How stupid are Europeans?

Why is it so hard for them to understand that trying to save the planet on your own, with a failing ETS, simply is not achieving any climate benefit, and will never achieve any climate benefit?

So why are they so incredibly stupid to start intimidating other nations with such a stupid tax?

Just exactly what has turned Europeans into such imbeciles… with their extraordinary odd obsession to halt catastrophic man-made global warming that isn’t happening?

  10. Bryan Harris says:

    How stupid are Europeans?

We are very stupid – we allowed our sanity to be hijacked by a bunch of corrupt green socialists, who prefer direct rule to democracy.

Just exactly what has turned Europeans into such imbeciles… with their extraordinary odd obsession to halt catastrophic man-made global warming that isn’t happening?

In Britain it was a 4 fold attack from wishy-washy liberals that took power, in the form of labour, lib-dems, the trade unions…oh and that damned trading club that wants to be a superstate; the EU.

In a sane world no socialists would ever be allowed to have any power…
